Trip Advisor

"The castle of La Ballue is the "real deal".. a listed historical monument in a very private rural setting with incredible views of the countryside yet very convenient to St Michael's Mount. Of course...for anyone who loves gardens, the world renown topiary gardens in and of themselves are a reason to visit and staying there gives you leisure to explore them in total privacy. La Ballue makes a perfect base to explore the Brittany and Normandy coast. The hosts are charming and helpful and will go the extra mile to make sure you have a great time. The rooms are 17th/early 18th century with the charm, sky high ceilings and creaky woodwork of the period but the comfort level is 21st century luxurious. We visited in January and our room was warm and cozy, which is quite an accomplishment given its size. This castle is a home and meeting the family, their teenage children, the staff, the garden experts added so much to the experience. If you like dogs, you will have the added benefit of two huge dogs, both very knowledgeable in the art of obtaining treats and scratches. I would highly recommend La Ballue to anyone who wishes to step back in time and experience the "old France" one reads about in history books and novels. We loved it so much, we stayed longer than planned and had to make a mad dash back to Charles de Gaulle Airport at the last minute."

Stay January 2014.
